Attended the "Epson print academy" on Saturday. I picked track one since the seminar advertisement pointed out that Track one was for advanced amateurs and track two was for professionals. To summarize I found the seminar to be of marginal value and if your an "advanced amateur" you would not miss much by skipping it.

I was expecting a lot more information hands on information about Epson printers and paper. The seminar mostly provided high level information. You can easily get this information by doing some research on the web. A couple of hours of the seminar involved playing "John Shaw" videos. The videos covered John's methodology and workflow - he was shooting at Bodie State park in California. The videos were informational and provided useful tidbits for lightroom or photoshop users. If you are interested in this information I would recommend that you attend John Shaw's photo seminars - they are much more detailed and provide much more useful information. John Shaw also made a live appearance in the evening to take questions for a few minutes.

There were also a number of guest speakers from Microsoft, OnOne and Nik software. The Microsoft guy demonstrated iView - Microsoft's product in the Digital asset management space. The OnOne and Nik software guys demonstrated plug ins for photoshop. The plug in's are cool but I think my life and photoshop workflow are complicated as it is. If "plugin porn" is what your into check them out.

Towards the end of the day a mini studio was setup and there was a live photo shoot by setting up. I thought that was cool. It was interesting to watch the effect that diffent angles of light have on a studio subject. I am not really into studio photography but it was definitely interesting to watch nonetheless.

Given that it was a commercial seminar there was a small stream of vendors advertising their products both hardware and software. There was also a small studio setup. The prints were illuminated beautifully using "SoLux" lights. The lights definitely add a third dimension to the whole setup. I would like to try this at some point for the pictures I have hanging on my walls at home.
